Get your IMAP app password

Step by step for Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and iCloud: where the app password lives and what host to use.

orderpilot reads your mailbox over IMAP. For that your email provider needs to give it a login that is not your real password: an app password. It is a one-off password for a single app, and you can revoke it at any time without touching your main login.

Never use your real password
Always use an app password. If your provider will not let you make one, the account cannot be connected directly. Use the forwarding trick at the bottom of this page.
ProviderIMAP hostPortUsername
Gmail / Google Workspaceimap.gmail.com993Your full address
Outlook / Hotmail / Liveoutlook.office365.com993Your full address
Yahooimap.mail.yahoo.com993Your full address
iCloudimap.mail.me.com993Your iCloud address

Always leave Use TLS ticked (port 993). The host and port in the app already default to Gmail's values.

Gmail

  1. 1
    Turn on 2-Step Verification

Google only offers app passwords once 2-Step Verification is on. Go to your Google Account → Security → 2-Step Verification and finish the setup.

  2. 2
    Open App passwords

Go to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords, or search “App passwords” in the Google Account search box.

  3. 3
    Create one

Name it orderpilot and press Create.

  4. 4
    Copy the 16 characters

Google shows it once, in four blocks of four. Spaces are fine — paste it exactly as shown.

Tip
Google Workspace (work or school) accounts can have app passwords switched off by the admin. If the option is missing, ask the admin or use another mailbox.

Outlook, Hotmail and Live

  1. 1
    Turn on two-step verification

Microsoft account → Security → Advanced security options.

  2. 2
    Create an app password

On the same page, under App passwords, choose Create a new app password.

  3. 3
    Connect with the host

Use outlook.office365.com, port 993, your full address as the username and the app password as the password.

Note
Microsoft changes how it handles third-party sign-ins from time to time. If the connection test says authentication failed even though the password is right, use the forwarding trick below instead.

Yahoo

  1. 1
    Open account security

Yahoo → Account Info → Account security.

  2. 2
    Generate an app password

Choose Generate app password (turn on two-step verification first if it asks), name it orderpilot, and copy the password it shows.

  3. 3
    Connect

Host imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 993, your full Yahoo address as the username.

iCloud

  1. 1
    Sign in to Apple ID

Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in (two-factor authentication must be on).

  2. 2
    App-specific passwords

Open Sign-In and Security → App-Specific Passwords → +, and name it orderpilot.

  3. 3
    Connect

Host imap.mail.me.com, port 993, your iCloud address as the username and the generated password.

Using Hide My Email?
Aliases created with Hide My Email forward to your iCloud inbox, so connecting that one inbox covers all of them.

Any other email, or a custom domain

Anything that supports IMAP works: enter the provider's IMAP host (search “<provider> IMAP settings”), port 993, and the app password or mailbox password it gives you.

Proton Mail only offers IMAP through its Bridge app, which runs on your own computer, so it cannot be connected here directly. Forward it instead.

The forwarding trick

If a mailbox cannot be connected, forward its mail to one that can. Set up automatic forwarding in the old mailbox (or a catch-all rule on your domain) to a Gmail address, then connect the Gmail. Order emails from every address arrive in that one inbox.
